You have this way… [POEM]

You have this way
of being
and an effect on me
that seems
to make things okay
that weren’t
before you called
or showed up
or stalled
the everything that I was doing
without you
you have this way
of making things
about you
and leaving me to question
an answer that I’d given
before
I’d made up my mind
to move on
from where we were
had I not escaped
in time
yet somehow
you find an opening
a crack in my stance,
a flaw in my plan
and then you always show
that you can
that you always have a chance
to still be here
like you were
for all of the things
I once needed you for
like being silly
and support
costing much more
than I could ever afford
but I find a way
to pay for it,
every time
treating your heart
to the life of mine
and being satisfied

You have this way
of interrupting my life
for the better
disheveling my perfect mess
for ever
and for no reason other
than the power to
and I cower to
finding a sense
where there should be silence
I should ignore you,
or hide that
the way you are
is the way I want to be
and you have this way,
of helping me believe.

Butterflies
and beer cans
broken glass
and trees,
Friendships
and kisses
First Loves
and leaves,
stray cats
and dogma

and scars
Christmas presents
and unicorns
cartoons
and stars,
sweet potatoes
and candied corn
pot luck
and black-eyed peas,
four leaf clovers
and beginners luck
welfare
and cheese,
card games
and hopelessness

Keep Showing Up… [POEM]

I will chase it,
and make it,
take it to the extreme
until I taste it
then I will only believe
that I should keep going
keep showing up
keep pushing,
keep throwing up
stay consistent
stay deliberate
KEEP SHOWING UP
no breaks
no excuses
no time off,
no use for it
I will persevere
I will plan
I will promote
I will prepare
and KEEP SHOWING UP
study and observe
explore and example
the less that I hesitate
the more I can handle
so I will stand there
face adversity
and applause
with acknowledgement,
and with cause
no deviation from the objective
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
is my perspective
and KEEP SHOWING UP
in spite of the chaos
despite the circumstances
regardless of any obstacle
however many chances
that it takes
if I have to bend
or bear
or break
whatever adjustment
that it takes,
I WILL KEEP SHOWING UP
to ensure my success
so that I give myself the opportunity
to do my best
so that I am the reason
that I get more
or do less
and yet, I WILL KEEP SHOWING UP
driven
determined
present
aware
whether it be meant for me,
out of my league,
against all odds,
or unfair
I WILL BE THERE
resident and seen
regardless of precedent
or scene
I will be,
I WILL BE,
there…

Until I have made it
then I will make it more
so that I can share what I know
to those who want to go
leave my lessons
expose my fault
for the purpose of transparency
to those I’ve taught
and being available
to share my way
because I kept showing up,
every day.

Can We Talk… [POEM]

Can we talk
one more time
over our bodies
intertwined
about less talking
or maybe not
I am quite the talker,
in case you forgot
I’ll use that one word
that got to you
I’ll say it as many times
as you need me to
for quite awhile
or as long as it takes
no need to get dressed,
I’ve got more to say
been studying new words
and ways to express
I hope you understand
my ways to confess
as I argue my point
in the language of love
let your tongue talk to me
the way that it does
and be just as animated,
pull me near
we can discuss dreams and secrets,
over silence and tears
remind me how you remember
forget we don’t belong
keep talking to me right,
I don’t see anything wrong
conversation necessary
been silent since
so say something special
like, “You belong to this”
as we talk all around the room
make our way into the light
talk to me all day,
talk to me through the night…

Can we talk,
something should be said
it’s been quiet in my mind,
and you’ve been talking in my head.

Over there…  [POEM]

There may be danger,
over there
something lurking
unaware
a surprise or two
an uprising due
or something else,
unfair

May be an opportunity
for growth
or a secret
to want to know
a treasure, a sign
a peace of mind
or just somewhere different,
to go

Be it a lesson
a clue
probably a fall, or two
the hard way and a shortcut
options, an assortment
advice, or even caution
warnings ever so often,
or the truth

Something familiar,
a difference
maybe a change, a distance
fun or purpose
an excitement beyond the surface
a want, a need
something to forget,or believe
and certain.

The part of You, I want… [POEM]

There is a part of you
I want
and I have discovered life to be
quite mundane without it
a routine in redundancy,
a judgement clouded
by the mist of missed signals
and mentions
that went without saying,
repetitiously
without playing the sounds
that are necessary
or needed
I once believed that
I deserved to suffer
as opposed to something
better
because she had always wanted more
and I had always let her
by the fault of my faith
pretending that it was okay
so I never chased,
not even once,
serendipitously
I just let it be
didn’t choose
didn’t seek
didn’t push
didn’t leave
didn’t blink
let it happen organically

and it left with ease (quit)

kept me in the fold (relapse)
recollections of my cold
set the tone and temperature
of my scold (detach)
carried my rebuke
into you
I had done more
to ignore
than implement
and the impression
grew to be intimate
so I entered it
hinted at a sense
that was deliberate
but called it more like
and magnificent
to the letter,
indigenous
but our instinct
was infinite
so we finished it

part of you
never even left
it stayed somewhere else
and was never going to give in
was always going to find reason
to be reminded
I was just the perfect lost soul
to find it
less of a requirement
more of a reminder
that you only wanted hope
heaven was too good for you
you only wanted (dope)
I wasn’t the kind of hit
that was good enough to
so you chose both
me in the light,
substance in the dark
both of us close
and you trying to manage
which of us
would be more damage
a past that never knew better
or a future that knows too well
the unfamiliar of could be pleasure
or the comfort of going through hell

I know how this works
play this game
until it hurts
or at least for long enough
to find out that doing both
isn’t as bad as it seems
if you value its worth

and there is a part of you
that I would do that for
would become whomever
and do whatever
to do that more
just to be a part of something
that could do that, or
at least have that,
an addiction,
that starts with you
maintained through hits,
a spark or two
enough to satisfy the piece of me
that wants,
a part of you.

It takes, Time… [POEM]

He watches the clock
ever a second disappears
searching for a different reason
to still be here

having to organize the clutter
or free Himself to think
wishing another hour away,
every time He blinks

but, it takes, time

every motion toward purpose
any second pointed for a try
all the energy spent guessing
yet never knowing why

an education for the reference
with experience for the cause
either rejection or refusal,
He’s been eager through it all

but, it takes, time

no such thing as being different
when no such beings are the same
He has to find himself just being
and then be just as strange

He must adjust for no other reason
than to be as ready as can be
He will have to register a mindset
that will someday set him free

but, it takes, time

going extra for the smallest
yet being small in times of grand
He will find it awkward to be the hero
but will never settle for just His chance

He will eventually find his calling
and He will abruptly change the way
He will be different as He said He was
and He will never have to say

but, it takes, time.
