Let Him… [POEM]

The belief of a child
becomes
the thought of a man
and so are the fears
that history began

DO NOT SAY NO!
say, not now
DO NOT TELL HIM HE CAN’T!
tell him, how
Say, “WOW” at his big ideas
and, “How’d you do it”
don’t be surprised at his wonder,
say that you knew that
HE COULD
and HE WOULD
as HE SHOULD

no reason not to,
don’t share your fears,
say, “I GOT YOU”
spot him aid and assistance
a few dollars
and space
and commitment

Teach him history
factually
and loyalty
accurately
independence and freedom
as differences
and make sure he listens
by giving him attention
examples omit expressions,
and he receives them both,
differently

Don’t rush him to age
or judgement
make no assumptions
regarding
let him wonder
and wander
beyond

Lead him to the wellspring
and leave him to explore
ignore that he tries else
let him explore
answer if he calls
but let him explore
free him if he gets trapped
then let him explore

Let him explore!

Prop him up against standard
demand he recognize
offer him integrity and character
for choices wise
expect of him deliberate aim
by a disciplined hand
Let him know value of a woman
by the worth of a man
place at him riches and store
fill him with empathy and pride,
so that he acknowledges pity
with an esteem inside

but let him explore

Teach him the love of failure
and the liability of success
show him that both are made possible
through a sense of respect

teach him to fight for cause
but to be willing to leave
show him the strength of his power
is in how he believes

Let him explore

Pour out your truths and tales
so that he may see
give your honest accounts
so he may receive

Do not stymie his question
let him ponder his brow
Give him time to figure it,
Now

Invest and encourage
acknowledge and accept
let him become what is possible,
let him know that exists.
